The Daffodils - William Wordsworth (1770-1850)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A Poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze

love this line the best :)

Wordsworth's has done such justice to simple beauty that goes unnoticed.

At first i thought he was lonley but then as i read on his hanuting imagery in describing his return from melancholy into the brightness of day is amazing.

I think we could interpret this in many ways though .. but i wouldn't mind dancing with daffodils it brings me peace - although i reckon i'd get teh nuzzy bees along with the flowers!!

Another good choice turtle head

that should read "buzzy bees"

romantic poets of this era gave nature such a different view don't you think? when i look at the flower stall outside my office i see colour, i see beauty, i see freshness but this just gives a totally new dimension to nature

I remember reading "The Daffodils" back in the school days. Of course not the poem but the fact. Specially cos I hated it. I never used to get poetry at that time, well some of them I still don't at times but now I don't care much. I interpret them the way I want to and see if it appeals to me.

I think thats the appeal - poetry can be percieved in pretty much anyway we see fit. There isn't always a right or wrong definityion to them. I would read things over and over and then read aloud to understand them or get the right setting and tone and then years later the view may have changed.

But yeah they do wonders to our imagination's
